Originally known as the Andrews/Nourse property, the Headwaters Conservation Area is named after the headwaters of the Assabet River, which it protects. The walking trails include expansive hilltop overviews of the SuAsCo reservoir (Mill Pond); glacial rock formations and unique wildlife habitat, including nesting locations for Blue Heron, Osprey, Great Horned Owl, and several families of white swan. Beaver, fox, deer and other animals are among the other inhabitants of the area.

The Headwaters Conservation Area contains approximately 100 acres of open space, most of which was purchased by the Westborough Open Space Preservation Committee in 1998. It protects 35% of the town's water supply. It offers opportunities for passive recreation and protects vital wildlife habitat. At the 2003 Town Meeting this land became a conservation area.

The Westborough Historical Commission has identified the land as a potential archeological site, containing prehistoric artifacts dating back 8,000 years. A unique "butterfly garden" is maintained by WCLT volunteers during the summer months near the Andrews Street entry.

The area is suitable for hiking, cross-country skiing, and related passive recreational activities. The trails are of average difficulty, with mild grades and cleared trails. During summer months, off-trail vegetation can include poison ivy and related irritants, so appropriate caution is advised.

One of the more popular activities is dog walking, with appropriate leash-control. An informational kiosk at the Andrews Street entry to the trails provides information and local photography.
